Citrus County on the Gulf Coast of Florida is often referred to as the "Golf Coast" because there are over twenty local area golf courses all within minutes of each other. Avid golfers from all over the country visit Florida each year and many make sure Citrus County is on their list. Visitors and locals alike know that the sunny weather mixed with warm breezes coming off the Gulf of Mexico combine to make winter golfing in Citrus County a pleasure all year round.

The golf courses in Citrus County are world-caliber and many have been ranked nationally. In fact, four have been ranked in the top 100 in the nation by Golf Digest magazine. They include Southern Woods Golf and Country Club at Sugarmill Woods in Homosassa Florida, World Woods in Brooksville with two top 100 ranked golf courses and Black Diamond Ranch in Lecanto Florida.

Southern Woods Golf and Country Club was nominated the Best New Private Course in 1993 by Golf Digest Magazine and offers flat, wide fairways, with thick rough, and challenging large greens.

World Woods, as mentioned, occupies two spots in the top 100 nationwide. The Rolling Oaks Golf Course was ranked 63rd in 1999 and the Pine Barrens Golf Course was ranked 9th in 1999. World Woods also has a world renowned practice facility nominated by Sports Illustrated magazine as “the best range in the world.”

Black Diamond Ranch with its famous Quarry Golf Course is easily the most unique golf course you will ever play. With 45 holes of breathtaking and challenging golf, Black Diamond does not disappoint. The golf course at Black Diamond is carved into the remains of a limestone quarry and was designed by Tom Fazio.

Other notable golf courses in Citrus County Florida include El Diablo in Citrus Springs. This challenging course is sure to deliver a devil of a game with thick forests of majestic oaks and rolling hills.

The Dunes Golf Course at Seville just south of the Citrus County line in Hernando County makes use of the natural terrain and beauty of the native vegetation. With the naturally sandy soil and over sized bunkers this course will challenge your accuracy and consistency.

Sugarmill Woods in Homosassa Florida is a country club paradise with three remarkable golf courses. The Cypress Golf Course offers narrow fairways and numerous bunkers. The Oaks Golf Course is water free and more open with few hazards. The Pine Golf Course at Sugarmill Woods is the longest of the three golf courses in Sugarmill Woods, and demands accurate drives because of the many out-of-bounds areas.
